Olympic cycling champion Chris Hoy who stole the hearts of the British public in Beijing has been quite rightly voted the BBC Sports Personality of the year to mark his magnificent achievements.

Hoy who won three gold medals in Beijing becomes the first cyclist to win the award

Since Tommy Simpson back in 1965.

The Edinburgh born cyclist became the first Briton to win three medals at the Games since 1908.

Such has the focus been on the sport of cycling this year after Hoy and his team sprint

(Jamie Staff and Jason Kenny) that is was only going to be a matter of time before awards such as this would come their way.

The British Cycling team won the Team of the Year and David Brailsford bagged the Coach of the year award also, so it was quite a night for the sport of cycling all round.

Chris Hoy beat Lewis Hamilton and Rebecca Adlington, who finished second and third respectively.
